A CANDY UNDER THE RAIN – Score: 8/10
While exploring the legendary island of Islay — a sacred ground for whisky aficionados — I made a deliberate stop in the quaint coastal village of Bowmore. This small fishing town, nestled along the shores of Loch Indaal, radiates a peaceful authenticity that perfectly matches the island’s mystique. With its timeless charm and ever-present drizzle, it seemed only fitting that I should seek out the spiritual heart of the town: the Bowmore distillery.
Reputed as the oldest distillery in continuous operation in Scotland, Bowmore stands as a symbol of both heritage and craftsmanship. During my visit, they had just released their 2023 Feis Ile special edition — an 18-year-old single malt bottled at a generous 52.8% ABV. This limited edition had spent its long maturation in a careful mix of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, promising an experience rooted in richness and complexity.
From the very first sip, the whisky asserted its character with confidence. A luxurious blend of caramel and dried fruits, particularly raisins, immediately coated the palate. The texture was smooth yet powerful, with a natural sweetness that recalled dessert wines without ever tipping into excess. Subtle layers of sea salt and freshly ground pepper unfolded gradually, bringing a savory edge that added depth and intrigue to the experience.
As the tasting developed, a gentle but insistent smoke emerged. Not aggressive or overwhelming, it served more as a thread that bound the sweeter and spicier elements together — like a soft echo of Islay’s signature peated soul. That smokiness lingered pleasantly, extending the tasting experience and reinforcing the whisky’s coastal roots.
The finish was long and deliberate, marked by refined woody tones — the kind that evoke well-aged oak and polished craftsmanship. It ended on a dry, elegant note, with the memory of spice and sherry sweetness gently fading rather than abruptly disappearing.
Although it may fall short of reaching the rarefied heights of a truly exceptional dram, this Bowmore Feis Ile 2023 is undeniably a well-made, thoughtfully matured whisky. It balances complexity with drinkability, sweetness with salinity, and tradition with a touch of modern finesse. A memorable pour — and an ideal companion for a rainy afternoon on Islay.
