Tamdhu 25 years

A VINTAGE CRANK – Score: 8/10

Continuing my journey through the delightful and characterful establishment that is The Abbey pub, I now proceed to the second whisky sample presented to me this evening — a venerable 25-year-old Tamdhu. I have, on several previous occasions, had the pleasure of tasting expressions from this distillery, and each time with a certain measure of satisfaction, it must be said. Yet, until tonight, I had not encountered an official bottling, which naturally adds a layer of intrigue and anticipation to this tasting.

Since its grand reopening in 2011, under the enlightened guidance of the independent bottler Ian McLeod, Tamdhu has devoted itself almost exclusively to the art of sherry-cask maturation. This deliberate focus has conferred upon the distillery a distinctive identity within the Speyside landscape. It thus seemed only fitting to explore whether the official releases would live up to, or perhaps even surpass, the charms often found in the creations of independent bottlers who have long celebrated Tamdhu’s character.

From the very first nose, the aromas are both unctuous and refreshing, offering a harmonious balance between richness and vivacity. The texture on the palate is silky, almost creamy, with a luscious honeyed quality that envelops the senses. Notes of wild berries, dried fruits, and raisins unfold gradually, accompanied by delicate undertones of oak and soft spice, the legacy of long years spent in sherry casks.

The overall impression is that of a remarkably well-balanced composition — straightforward yet elegant, generous without ever being heavy. The finish lingers gracefully, with a subtle persistence that speaks of both finesse and craftsmanship.

A true delight for connoisseurs who appreciate the gentle warmth and sweetness of sherry-aged whiskies, and a fine testament to Tamdhu’s revival as a distillery of distinction.
